Conn. sees first death from swine flu

The Associated Press Updated: 06/03/2009

HARTFORD, Conn.—A Connecticut resident has died from the swine flu, the first death from the H1N1 virus in the state. The state Department of Public Health would only describe the person as a New Haven County resident who was more than 50 years old. Officials said the person had a higher risk of complications from the flu because of underlying health issues. The state also announced Wednesday that it had confirmed 40 additional cases of H1N1 flu, bringing the state’s total to 397. Officials say the actual number may be much higher because many people with mild symptoms don’t go to their doctor or a hospital. The World Health Organization says the virus is responsible for at least 117 deaths worldwide, mostly in Mexico.
