Sue Castner of Portland is a longtime Clintonite who was a big fund-raiser for Hillary Clinton and will be one of her delegates at the Democratic National Convention. Nobody was more loyal. Days before Clinton dropped out of the race, Castner told me: “If it comes down to a [convention] floor fight, I grew up in New Jersey. I’ve got brass knuckles. I am not remotely afraid of a floor fight.”
Castner is still coming to terms with the reality of Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee, judging by an e-mail of hers (see it after the jump) that is making the rounds. Castner was in a group of Clinton supporters who met with Obama and Clinton on June 26 in D.C. – and she wasn’t too happy with how it went.
Ms. Castner’s email:
First, let me apologize for not getting back to many of you sooner. I’ve been traveling off and on since being elected as a Clinton delegate at the 1st CD on June 7th. I wish I could answer every question individually. Please understand that the situation has been a dynamic, fluid one making it virtually impossible to keep everyone in a specific loop. That said…
Two Thursday’s ago, June 26th, I attended a meeting in Washington, D.C. with Senators Clinton and Obama. Incorrectly labeled a “fundraiser” by the press, it was supposed to be a small gathering of Hillary’s national finance committee and while there were a few in attendance to write checks to the Obama campaign that night, many did not.
Prior to this gathering, I had had several discussions and meetings with many staunch Obama supporters. These friends have all been exceptionally gracious in reaching out and have been willing to listen to the concerns brought forth. Many have eagerly awaited welcoming HRC supporters on board. So I was genuinely looking forward to the evening in Washington with an open mind, if not an open checkbook. Having already met Senator Obama in Scottsdale several years ago, I was truly hoping to see what my friends had related to me in oh-so many ways. I was hoping to be wowed, not wooed. I wanted to hear something that would bring me totally on board with the many friends and fellow Oregon delegates who support Senator Obama.
The first question during the very brief Q&A period dealt with a persistent rumor about Hillary’s name NOT being on the first ballot in Denver. As a Clinton delegate, I am looking forward to representing the people who voted for me at the 1st CD convention and the 259,000 Oregonians who voted for Hillary in May. I also feel a level of responsibility to the 18 million voters who must be respected, heard, and no longer invisible. Hillary has expressed this sentiment so much more eloquently than I ever could. So I, along with others on Hillary’s finance committee who are elected delegates, wanted to hear that there would be an open convention in which Hillary Clinton’s name is placed into nomination and delegate votes are registered by roll call — as has been the procedure at Democratic conventions throughout modern history.
The people I have been in the trenches with for the last 18 months all feel that Hillary’s achievements as the first woman to present a serious challenge must be recorded for history – especially since convention week includes the 88th anniversary of women’s suffrage. Imagine attending THE convention that celebrates the phenomenal achievements of generations of women in politics! What would be a better way to join splintered Democratic constituencies into a winning alliance? After all, if the sensible shoe were on the other foot, would anyone in his or her right mind even think of suggesting that Senator Obama’s name not be placed in nomination? Gary Hart, Ted Kennedy, Jesse Jackson, Joe Biden, Jerry Brown, Paul Tsongas (among others) have ALL had their names placed in nomination with far fewer than 1,896 delegates.
My friend who begged the question in DC explained that if we, on the finance committee, were expected to put our time, energy, effort, and rolodexes into getting Senator Obama elected, we wanted some assurance that we would be able to vote for Hillary in Denver.
We all thought it was a reasonably benign question with a relatively simple answer. I was absolutely stunned when Senator Obama replied that that there were many issues that needed to be “negotiated” and we would not have a “negotiating session” that night. He did attempt to placate us by saying that Hillary would be “front and center” at the convention. He also told the woman who asked the question that he DID want her rolodex. Answers to other questions about the blatant misogyny and reducing Hillary’s campaign debt were no more satisfying.
My deep disappointment in the entire process and the outcome is not likely to dissipate yet I remain hopeful. Everyone needs to do what he or she is comfortable doing between now and November. And EVERY decision deserves respect. I have yet to decide whether I will write a check to Senator Obama’s campaign. And I am not asking you to contribute at this time – I cannot in good conscience make this request of anyone until Senator Obama commits to allowing a first ballot roll call vote. So for right now, I am focused on making sure that elected Hillary delegates and super-delegates CAN vote for her in Denver.
Another important endeavor for which I will ask assistance is reducing Hillary’s campaign debt to vendors. She is not asking anyone to help pay back the money that she personally loaned to the campaign, which she regards as her own investment. If you haven’t already maxed out to Hillary, please contribute whatever you can (all amounts large and small are welcome): http://www.hillaryclinton.com/contribute/jsc44
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on all of this. To that end, I will be having a gathering at my house this Saturday, July 12 starting at 2 PM. I simply ask that this NOT be a “bitch” session. I am hoping that any Obama supporters and/or campaign staff and/or other members of the DPO feel free to attend as well. I know that there is a SCC meeting in Tualatin ending at 2 PM next Saturday and attendees are welcome to join us. As with all of the gatherings at my place, I’m sure it’ll go late into the evening. Please RSVP if you can.
I thank you for your continued support.
As always – Sue Castner
According to Will Bower, Hillary’s debt has been greatly reduced without Obama’s help. PUMAs efforts are releasing her from the DNC/Obama stranglehold. Please consider contributing another $5.44 each so Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton can go into the convention STRENGTHENED BY PUMA POWER.
As a PUMA and a Senator Clinton supporter and i must say you are a brave Lady and i am proud of you. Wish i could have been at the party at your home. We are standing with Hillary and are in the multi-maillions. Rise Hillary Rise

He DID want your rolodex? Well here are my thoughts. We need to make a lot of noise that Obama needs a stadium but is not willing to allow his worthy history-making opponent the traditional roll call vote. We need to make lots and lots and lots of noise.
What is his problem? This is such a no-brainer for him.

He doesn’t want her name put in nomination because he fears she just might WIN. Anyone older enough to remember 1964, this is a similar situation. The country was still reeling from the assassination of JFK in November, 1963. By convention time, they had planned a large memorial tribute to JFK at the convention, complete with a very moving and emotional movie tribute AND worse of ALL for LBJ, a speech by Bobby Kennedy, his arch nemesis. LBJ so feared a swell of emotional pandemonium, a Kennedy lovefest, people weeping and begging Bobby to pick up his fallen brother’s mantle, that LBJ made SURE that Bobby’s speech was scheduled AFTER his nomination was sewn up.
Sound familiar? NObama will give Hillary all the limelight she wants, but AFTER they place the crown on his head. He and his staff are terrified that given half a chance, this convention would bolt from him, given all we know NOW and what still is to come out, and nominate Hillary. His numbers are steadily declining, God knows what they’ll be by convention time.
He doesn’t want to give Hillary, her delegates or her supporters an INCH to wiggle, not an inch to let her in the door. Because he knows he’d lose.
Whatever, Barky, we’ll do all we can from out here to make sure you lose anyway. NObama ever, NO VOTES!
What someone should have said, when he said it would be “negotiated, is WHY does it have to be …after all 18 million people (more than any other candidate) voted for her, and she has every right to be on the ballot and the roll call.
Honestly, the arrogance of this inept man.

Barack isn’t playing this smart, whatever his true apathy, he ought to be smart enough to be positive about Hillary’s 18 mil wanting to support him and knowing that depends on a real convention, not something negotiated (read fixed) in advance. It’s amazing he was dumb enough to say that, he might have said it wasn’t up to him, but were it that’s where he’d be. how he going to speak to world leaders if his prejudices are written on his sleeve? This is yet another sign that he has little experience, and nothing useful when it comes to running for president and needing to win votes.

“cannot forget his laughter when the women said “how do we beat the bitch”
Obviously you haven’t seen the clip. McCain was in shock and looked at the lady like she was crazy and he backed very far away from her while continuing to look at her like “you got to be kidding”. He was speechless and didn’t say anything.
January 14, 2008 — PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Barack Obama claims to run a clean campaign, but someone in his camp took a swipe at Hillary Clinton through the candidate’s theme song.
As Obama and his wife, Michelle, strolled triumphantly into his victory party in Des Moines, Iowa, on Jan. 3, Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” was blaring. In it, Jay raps, “I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain’t one.”
Some listeners took it as a not-so-sly reference to Hillary.
“We didn’t know he used that,” a shocked Clinton spokesperson said.

I know that the pressure must be enormous and that you will continue to be strong and her delegate! I personally was not a supporter of Hillary’s until I saw her in the debates with the other contenders. Her wisdom and grasp of the issues was amazing… and after her debate before the PA primary (where I live)… I will never forget the whining by Barack Obama and the use of his middle finger and his supporters “getting the meaning of that”. The sexism in the media, the lies told by Obama, the Flip-flopping by him on major issues (I actually sent his campaign a pair of them), and his continuing to behave so juvenile have sealed the deal. I will not vote for the man. Please be aware that I am not the only one, for there are myriads of voices that do not comment that are saying the same thing. Best wishes and Thank you again…

Yes Susan, hold on to your checkbook your rolodex and your dignity. Please stand tall at the Convention and vote for Hillary, that is of course if we can get something that should be a no brainer to be part of this process.
The goals of The Denver Group are simple:
1) An open convention.
2) Senator Clinton’s name placed in nomination. No symbolic roll call vote.
3) Speeches allowed by supporters of Senator Clinton on
behalf of her candidacy.
4) A genuine roll call vote with Senator Clinton as a legitimate candidate.
5) No coronation.
It’s a damn shame that grassroots organizations have to be formed to ensure that the Democratic Party is indeed democratic.

I am a very strong, proud Yorkshire woman. I voted for Maggie Thatcher even though I did not like her. My reasoning was that a woman could not do any worse than man, & more than likely probably do better. Just like Hillary, she was her own woman. Amazingly, the men in my country were very open to a female Prime Minister & voted for her in droves. I was right, despite her mistakes (and who does not make mistakes)she did a great job, & the great resurgance of England was ruined by that whimp, Major, who threw it all away.
I am in the same position now as an almost 60 year young woman, as I was back then. I have never liked Hillary, but I know she is the one right for the job, she knows her stuff. The more I saw being done to her & said about her made me move closer to her side. I eventually decided she was the one to vote for, as did my 34 year old daughter & her friends.
We have a saying in England about someone who makes the hairs stand up on your neck – HE OR SHE GIVES ME THE WILLIES – & from the beginning, Obama has done exactly that. I could see right through him, he is an arrogant, egotistical, lying mysogynist. How sad, that Democrats, especially women chose a man that they knew nothing about except his claim for “change.” He claims that Hillary is part of the “old guard.” Well, what has he done while stating he is all about change – he surrounded himself with all the “OLD WHITE GUARD.” Let us look at Obama’s change: Kennedy, Kerry, Edwards, Gore, need I go on. It makes me want to throw up when I see him campaigning around the world, as if they can vote for him. It is one thing to be able to shine while speaking, but is not a good sign of whether you can run a country. As the saying goes: He can talk-the-talk, but he cannot walk-the-walk.
I have always known, having been a military spouse & employee, how bad gender bias was in this country, but not until this election time, did I realise how mysogynistic this country really is. There is a distinct hatred in America of women of all colour. Women around the world have proven beyond a shadow of doubt that we are quite capable of leading a country – England, Germany, Israel & others – AMERICA NEEDS TO COME OUT OF THE DARK AGES & JOIN THE REST OF OUR ADVANCED COUNTRIES. In doing so, I believe that America will be a better place. Women have less rights here than in most other westernised countries -HOW SAD!
I would like you to know that I am a “recovering Republican,” who campaigned for Kerry/Edwards (they did not deserve my time) whose Republican friends who crossed over to vote for Hillary, have now gone back to vote for McCain. My daughter & her friends, just like me, are not going to vote at all & I wonder how many other women will do just that.
What a sad place this country is in, when a bunch of “old white men” will push on board & promote a totally inexperienced, relatively unknown man of partial colour, to stop a woman who they realised was going to get the Democrat nomination because she was strong enough to do so & still should have it. They do not deserve to win in November. While I cannot stand the Republicans, at least they are open about their gender bias, the Democratic party are disgusting for the tricks they pulled & for what they did to Hillary.

God help this country if Obama gets in!!!
